“17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
Note: From Glory to Glory
2 Corinthians 3:1-9 KJV
1 Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?
2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:
5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
• Our Sufficiency Is of God
Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 3:5
“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves… but our sufficiency is of God.”
Paul teaches that the greatest evidence of Christian ministry is not a letter of recommendation, human credentials, or personal achievement—it is a transformed life.
1. Our Testimony Matters- We are living epistles — vv. 1–3
Paul considered the Corinthian believers as his “epistle,” written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God upon their hearts.
Our life is a testimony that others can read. What people see in us should point them to Christ.
2. Our Talents are given by our Maker- our sufficiency comes from God — vv. 4–5
Paul openly recognized that he was not sufficient in himself. His ability and confidence came through Christ and from God.
We do not have to depend upon our own strength. Whatever God calls us to do, He is able to equip us to accomplish.
3. Our Transformation is made complete by the Holy Spirit- The Spirit gives life — v. 6
“The letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.” The Law revealed sin and condemnation, but the New Testament ministry brings life and transformation through the Spirit.
Christianity is not merely about knowing God’s Word; it is allowing the Holy Spirit to work God’s Word into our hearts and lives.
4. Our Triumphing Ministry- The ministry of righteousness is more glorious — vv. 7–9
The Law given through Moses had glory, but the triumphant ministry of righteousness through Christ has much greater glory, because it brings the believer into God’s grace and transforming work.
God does not need us to prove how capable we are; He asks us to trust how capable He is. We are His living epistles—our conversation, conduct, character, and Christ-like faith should allow others to “read” Jesus Christ in our lives.
Let us Remember:
“I am not sufficient of myself, but my sufficiency is of God.”
2 Corinthians 3:10-18 KJV
10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:
13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.
15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
• Our Salvation Ushers us From Glory to Glory
The glory of the Old Covenant was temporary, but the glory found in Christ is everlasting. When we turn to the Lord, the veil is removed, the Holy Spirit gives us liberty, and our lives are continually transformed into Christ’s image. And these comes together with our blessed hope:
1. That Christ’s glory is greater and eternal. — vv. 10–11
What was once glorious under the Old Covenant cannot compare with the exceeding glory of the New Covenant through Christ. What Christ gives us remains forever.
2. That Christ great sacrifice removes the veil — vv. 12–16
The veil represents spiritual blindness that prevents people from truly understanding God’s Word. But when a heart turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
A heart surrendered to Christ receives spiritual understanding.
3. That Christ’s grace sustain us with this anointing: Where the Spirit is, there is liberty — v. 17
True freedom is not simply freedom from circumstances; it is freedom from the bondage of sin, condemnation, and spiritual blindness. The Holy Spirit gives us liberty to live for God.
4. That Christ gives us this blessed assurance: We are transformed from glory to glory — v. 18
As we continually behold the Lord through His Word, we are changed into His image. Christian growth is not merely about knowing more—it is about becoming more like Christ.
