Then Jonah Prayed Unto The LORD his GOD
Lesson #6 : Faith
“[1] Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,
[2] And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.”
Jonah is a typical picture of a servant who tried to refuse and run away from GOD’s calling to preach His words. And though The LORD has given volition to everyone to chose which way to take, nothing is able to scape; for that volition is limited, particularly for a specific servant He called for a special purpose.
For The LORD will never be willing, that His forgiveness and compassion be unknown to the specific group of people, who is about to be punished and afterward perish, by His righteous judgement, because of their wickedness.
Jonah’s prayer proved that, though he is stubborn and disobedient to The LORD his GOD, he fully know who his GOD is . And thus, his prayers reaches to the throne of GOD and he was saved.
This will help us fully understand the extent of our volition, which ends when there are GOD’s instruction, and faith is needed to obey His will for our lives; by looking through what Jonah did:
• Recognizing GOD’s power
“[3] For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
• Regathering his wits
[4] Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.”
• Realizing GOD’s mercy in his helplessness
“[5] The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
[6] I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.
[7] When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord : and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.”
• Reminding his depravity
“8] They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. “
• Resolving his error by humbly submitting to the will of GOD
“[9] But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord. “
• Renewing his life and strength in GOD’s salvation
“[10] And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.”
Through these, we can see that:
1. Faith has a purpose- Romans 8:28
2. Faith is progressive-Ephesians 4:14,15
3. Faith produces- James 3:17 , Gal. 5:22-24/ Hebrews 12:6/ qProverbs 11:30
4. Faith is passionate- Matthew 9:36-38, 1 Peter 4:8-10, Gal 5:5,6 KJV
Therefore, we concludes that, faith is the first and foremost essential in committing ourselves in the will and ways of The LORD. As it said in Hebrews 11:1 KJV
[1] Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
That we can continually testify the goodness of our LORD in our lives, to them who are lost, to them who are seeking GOD’s purpose.
Have a great day ahead.
