A Flying Roll

 August 28, 2023, Morning Bible Reading and Meditation- Zechariah 5KJV

 For MItcah Bible Baptist Church Morning Devotional Bible Study

1 Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.

And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.

Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.

I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

Words to ponder:

A Flying Roll

(Lesson #20: The Testaments)

1. THE OLD TESTAMENT ( Consists of 39 books)

The measurement: 20 x 10 cubits “approximately 15ft x30ft”

According to some scholars, this is the size of the scroll; where the commandments of God given to Moses was written. From here also was the Solomon’s porch was patterned.

The preciepts that was written in this roll were the ten commandments, which can be found in the old testament’s book of the law and prophecies: the guidelines and the basis of judgement for the Jews, as much as the things has come, the things that happens in our generation and the things that must come in future

The  basic Old Testament law is written first in the book of Exodus 20 KJV as these ten commandments:

And God spake all these words, saying,

I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

13 Thou shalt not kill.

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s.

This was rehearsed by Moses in the ears of his people before his departure in Deuteronomy 5:6-21KJV

This testament comprises in the words that was spoken to Prophet Zechariah by the angel that talked to him:

Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.

I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.”

This law shall bring cursed to the one that steals and to the one that swears falsely in The LORD of host’s Name.

From Verses 3-7 of Exodus 20 KJV falls to the falsely swearing or blasphemy against GOD.

• Worshipping other gods v.2,3
• Making idols to worship, as representation of God.v4-6
• Using God’s Name in vain. v7
•

From Verse 8-17 all falls in the stealing:

• Stealing from GOD the day of Sabbath v.8-11
• Stealing from parents’ honor v. 12
• Stealing from other’s their life through killing. V13 it was said: “a thief is a brother of a murderer”
• Stealing from other’s her husband or his wife.v.14
• Stealing from other’s their personal belongings or means of living. V. 15
• Stealing from other’s righteous judgement. V. 16
• Stealing from other’s the joy of having what they earned and deserved by coveting what belongs to them. V. 17

These was summarized into two by The LORD JESUS CHRIST during His earthly ministry when asked to tempt Him; according to the gospel of Matthew 22:35-40KJV

35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Just as how the angel metaphorically spoken to Zechariah the comprises law into two written in a flying roll, which brings cursed to every house, where the one who steals and swears falsely in God’s Name, is also the same way The LORD JESUS CHRIST confirmed into two the law and the prophets. Wherewith, no man will get saved if any of these testaments where violated. Cursed shall surely fall upon him and his household.

But GOD knows the frailty of mankind. That He offered Himself to fulfill that which He covenanted through His prophet.

2. The NEW TESTAMENT (consist of 27 books)

Jeremiah 31:31-34KJV

31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was anhusband unto them, saith the Lord:

33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saiththe Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

-After these days, after the works of The LORD be done to the Gentiles, then this new covenant for God’s chosen people be fulfilled. But to the believing Jews, they shall obtain these promises;

Hebrews 8KJV

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

Hebrews 9KJV

11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

Thanks be to GOD and our Loving Savior and LORD JESUS CHRIST, who, through His death, completed the New Testament; not only for the Jews, but for us Gentiles also.

That we, who believed, are not counted as enemies of God, that we will not be inflicted by the cursed of the law anymore, but obtained His mercies and precious promise. As what Apostle Paul; who are called to be the apostle to the gentiles has writtenin Colossians1:2,13-29 KJV

Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:

25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

The cursed from that flying roll’, though it was spoken by the angel to Prophet Zechariah to warn Israel and Judahin the old testament, is still effective to all who do not yet come to the saving knowledge of the gospel of CHRIST. But for us who believe it has no power anymore. Because we were redeemed through the blood of that sinless sacrifice.

But beware not to get engage in stealing nor swearing falsely in God’s Name, for surely, God will not hold us guiltless. For as a father castigated his children, so our loving GOD will surely correct us from our sin.

Let our life be for the praises for our LORD and Loving Savior JESUS CHRIST. AMEN… AMEN!

Zechariah 5KJV

Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.

Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.

And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.

And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.

And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.

Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.

10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?

11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.
